Participants of the Isle of Wight birth cohort research study are invited to come forward for their next follow up. Participants who attend their follow up before 31 May 2025, will be entered in to a draw to win a cash prize of up to £200!

The research is led by Professor Hasan Arshad from the University of Southampton and NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). Professor Arshad said: “The scientific knowledge gleaned from the Isle of Wight cohort has changed the way we think of asthma and allergic disease. It is all thanks to our cohort participants whose selfless dedication has been the guiding principle of this research over the last 35 years.”

Researchers from The David Hide Asthma and Allergy Research Centre are trying to contact everyone who has taken part in the study and were born between January 1989 and February 1990, to continue with what is one of the oldest and most comprehensive studies of allergies and asthma.

Our Senior Research Sister at the David Hide Centre, Maria Larsson said: “We are looking for participants that are part of the 1989 Isle of Wight Birth Cohort and would like to invite them to come in for their next follow-up appointment at the David Hide Asthma and Allergy Research Centre. We appreciate the time and commitment that all our participants have given to this study over the years and we are really pleased to be able to give something back by entering everyone that attends their follow up appointment into the prize draw.

“Thank you to everybody who has been involved in the 1989 and 1990 birth cohort so far. The data you have provided has been tremendously helpful in improving our understanding of asthma and other allergic diseases.”

Members of the cohort have taken part in 7 studies to date (at ages 1, 2, 4, 10, 18 and 26 years) and are being asked to complete a questionnaire and attend a health check at The David Hide Asthma and Allergy Research Centre at St Mary’s Hospital.
