Our Diabetes and Endocrine Centre is a specialist resource centre for these two specialities offering advice and care to patients and the healthcare professionals who look after them.
The following services are provided at St. Mary's Hospital:
- Diabetes clinics for patients who have Type 1 diabetes, rare types of diabetes genetic, monogenic, people who have had transplants and those on renal replacement.
- Periodic assessment of diabetic complications.
- Rapid access and drop in service, run by diabetes specialist nurses.
- Telephone and email advice to patients and professionals.
- Diagnosis and management of patients who have complications.
- Specialist foot service in collaboration with the vascular team and community podiatry team, with one of the lowest amputation rates in the country.
- Patient education programme for people with Type 1 diabetes.
- Diabetes Dietetic service.
- Transitional adolescent clinic, to support young people transferring to the adult service.
- Insulin Pump therapy service.
- Care of women with diabetes during pregnancies and pre-pregnancy counselling in joint antenatal clinics.
- Provision of education updates in diabetes care for healthcare professionals working in the community and hospital settings.
- The Hospital Diabetes Team, which includes specialist nursing advice, will accept where appropriate both Type I patients and Type II patients, except for those admitted to hospital under care of other consultants, and manage within agreed guidelines.
- People who require specialist endocrine care.
Referral to the Diabetes and Endocrine Centre is via:
- GP written referrals requested through the electronic referral system and urgent referrals telephoned through to the Diabetes and Endocrine Centre.
- Inpatient referral via eCareLogic.
