The ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) service is provided by three consultant surgeons who work closely together as a team with other health professionals, such as nurses, audiologists, speech therapists and physiotherapists to provide a seamless service to patients. All three clinicians cover the full range of ENT but have sub-specialist areas of interest.
The department deals with all conditions affecting the ear, nose, throat, neck and thyroid gland. In the ear this includes problem with hearing, balance (including dizziness), tinnitus (noises in the ear) and ear infections.
Problems in the nose include rhinitis, and sinus disease, injury to the nose, nasal allergies and (rarely) tumours. In the throat patients may present with a hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing and snoring.
Neck and suspicious thyroid lumps are usually seen urgently and treated appropriately. Although many patients do not require surgery, consultant ENT surgeons do carry out a wide variety of operations on all age groups.
