Our service aims to ensure that every stroke patient receives the best care throughout their journey from admission to follow up after discharge.
This will incorporate expert advice on stroke prevention, acute assessment and management including consideration for clot busting drugs (stroke thrombolysis) and stroke rehabilitation.
Stroke Unit
Our Stroke Unit has 24 beds that includes 4 high dependency stroke beds. These beds are where each patient receives intensive care and initial assessment by the Stroke Multi-disciplinary Team when they are first admitted.
Rehabilitation will start as soon as the stroke team feels that it is safe to begin. Rehabilitation begins in the acute phase of stroke until patients are medically stable, then options will be discussed on where to continue care. This could mean:
- Staying on unit and being moved into one of the stroke rehabilitation beds.
- Going home and having specialist stroke rehabilitation provided by our Stroke Early Supported Discharge Team.
- Being transferred to a specialist rehabilitation centre. This is for patients with very specialist and complex needs.
